2026 Treasury Graduate Development Program

As a Treasury graduate, you’ll have access to rewarding career opportunities in an Australian Government central agency, exposure to meaningful work in several areas of the department and the opportunity to work on policies that shape the Australian economic landscape and make a difference for all Australians.  

The Treasury Graduate Development Program runs for 2 years and has 3x 8-month rotations in different work areas, allowing you to gain broad experience across the department.  

As a Treasury graduate you will contribute to work that informs key Australian economic policy in areas including:

  • markets
  • macroeconomics
  • revenue
  • fiscal
  • international and foreign investment
  • small business and housing 
  • corporate and law 

Daily tasks can include:

  • research
  • analysis
  • briefing
  • coordination
  • advice, and  
  • support on policies and initiatives related to existing and emerging government priorities.  

Our program will provide you with tailored development workshops, training opportunities and mentorship. Graduates are matched with a graduate buddy who has already completed the program to help you get your best foot forward. You will join a department with a valued and inclusive cohort, where leadership is invested in your professional growth and development, allowing you to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence as an influential employee of the Australian Public Service.  

Most graduates will be based in our Canberra office, however those already residing in Sydney and Melbourne may have the opportunity to secure one of the limited placements in one of the state offices, with occasional travel to Canberra.  

Salary and work arrangements: 

  • starting salary of $76,059 per annum plus 15.4 per cent superannuation – Treasury APS 3 level
  • flexible working arrangements in agreement with your manager and team requirements.  

Leave and allowances: 

  • 20 days annual leave and additional office closure between Christmas and New Year
  • relocation assistance for eligible graduates – including temporary accommodation (if required)
  • annual lifestyle contribution allowance of $600 to help maintain a healthy lifestyle

Eligibility:  

Our program is open to all university students who have graduated in the last 5 years from a range of disciplines including law, economics, econometrics, public policy, political science, finance, mathematics, business, commerce, data, statistics, and more.  

To apply for our 2026 Graduate Development Program, you must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • be an Australian citizen, (or become an Australian citizen by December 2025)
  • complete, or will complete, an Australian-recognised undergraduate qualification (bachelor degree or higher) by 31 December 2025. If your degree is from an overseas university, you will need to provide a statement from an Australian state or territory government overseas qualifications unit 
  • be willing to:
    • move to Canberra for the program duration or travel to Canberra for development activities if placed in Sydney or Melbourne
    • obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance on acceptance into the program
    • undergo any police, character, health or other required checks.  

Application Process and Timeline:  

  • Stage 1: Online Application: 28 January 2025 – 14 April 2025 

    • resume and academic transcripts 

    • details of two referees

    • short written response to application question 

  • Stage 2: Online assessment: April 2025 

    • online assessment will be in the form of a timed written assessment. 

  • Stage 3: Virtual interview and reference checking: May – June 2025  

  • Stage 4: Merit Pool and Employment Offers: from August 2025 onwards

Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP) – Economist Stream 

The Treasury leads graduate recruitment for the Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP) – Economist Stream with participating agency involvement. When you apply for the AGGP – Economist Stream, you can be considered for graduate roles at several participating Australian Public Service departments and agencies through one application. 

The Economist Stream will be advertised 3 March 2025. You can apply for both the Treasury Graduate Program and the Economist Stream Graduate recruitment processes – just make sure to check the eligibility requirements.
