The Department of the Treasury is a respected and influential central economic agency, and the Australian Government’s lead economic adviser. We have around 1,400 employees who work across our offices in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

The Treasury provides advice to the Australian Government, and implements policies and programs to achieve strong and sustainable economic and fiscal outcomes for Australians on issues such as:

Why Treasury as a graduate

Graduates are an important part of Treasury’s workforce and are actively integrated into all aspects of Treasury from day one. 

As a Treasury graduate, you’ll have access to rewarding career opportunities in an Australian government central agency, exposure to meaningful work in several areas of the department, the opportunity to work on policies that shape the Australian economic landscape and make a difference for all Australians.  

Our graduate program runs for 2 years with 3x 8-month rotations in different work areas, allowing you to gain experience across the department, and contribute to work that informs key Australian economic policy. Work placements are based on your skills, academic qualifications, and Treasury’s portfolio responsibilities. You can also nominate work areas of interest in your second and final rotations.  

Graduate rotations may be in areas such as: 

  • fiscal, tax and social policy
  • law, legislation and regulatory policy
  • market conduct and consumer data policy
  • macroeconomic modelling and data analysis
  • foreign investment
  • financial services
  • small business
  • domestic and international economic conditions
  • housing
  • climate and energy. 

You will contribute to work that informs key Australian economic policy in areas including: 

  •       markets 
  •       macroeconomic 
  •       revenue 
  •       fiscal  
  •       international and foreign investment, and 
  •       small business, housing, corporate and law.  

Your daily tasks may include:  

  • research 
  • analysis 
  • briefing 
  • coordination 
  • advice, and 
  • support on policies and initiatives related to existing and emerging government priorities.  

Our program will provide you tailored development workshops, training opportunities, and mentorship. Graduates are matched with a graduate buddy who has already completed the program. You will join a department with a valued and inclusive cohort, where leadership is invested in your professional growth and development, allowing you to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence as an influential employee of the Australian Public Service.  

Most of our graduates will be based in our Canberra office, however those already residing in Sydney and Melbourne may get the opportunity to secure one of the limited placements in one of the state offices, with occasional travel to Canberra to participate in development activities and network with other graduates.  

You will have opportunities to get involved with our many employee networks and connect with graduates from other departments. Our program is open to all university students who have graduated in the last 5 years. Graduates must be willing to work for the government of the day and be curious and driven to work on topics that will directly make a difference to Australians.

Application Process

Your application journey

We’re looking forward to welcoming our next round of graduates to Treasury. To assist you with your application here are a few things you should know. 

  • What to include in your application

    Before you start your application, make sure to check that you’re eligible to apply. You can check your eligibility by visiting our website

    If you meet the criteria, it’s time to get your paperwork in order. Your application must include your:

    • resume
    • academic transcripts (if you don't have this at home, contact your university and ask them how to access a copy)
    • response to the application question. 
  • Submit your application 

    When you are happy with your application, it’s time to submit. All applications must be submitted through the Treasury online careers portal before the application closing date of Monday 14 April 2025. 

    Applications for our 2026 Graduate Development Program open 28 January 2025 and close in 14 April 2025. 

  • Shortlisting

    Once applications are closed, we assess all applications received. We aim to notify all applicants of their application outcome and next steps by May 2025. 

  • Online assessment and virtual Interview 

    If you’re successful in your online application you’ll be required to complete an online, written assessment task. Following this you may be invited to participate in an online interview. Interviews are expected be held throughout June 2025. 

  • Referee check 

    Following the interview candidates’ references will be checked. When choosing your referees, it’s ideal that they can comment on your work or your skills and capabilities as a team member.

  • Outcomes advised 

    Successful candidates will be offered graduate positions from August 2025. Unsuccessful candidates will have the opportunity to request feedback on their application.
