Leon Li

Environmental Graduate
Griffith University

How did I show up during my graduate program?

I focused on bridging the gap between university and a professional, project-driven environment by observing experienced colleagues and asking questions.

I took responsibility for my tasks and consistently aimed to show up as someone who could contribute reliably and positively to our infrastructure projects.

I am naturally introverted, so I showed up ready to challenge myself. I approached the program with the mindset that my openness and communication would naturally improve as my experience and confidence grew.

What impact did I have on those around me?

I supported my colleagues wherever possible, jumping in to assist with everything from on-site activities to documentation and environmental reporting.

It is incredibly meaningful to know that my daily contributions made a real, tangible difference to the project's environmental footprint.

What am I proud of?

I am incredibly proud of my journey from being initially unfamiliar with site operations to comfortably managing responsibilities and handling tasks independently.

I am proud to be doing meaningful work that safeguards the environment and ensures strict compliance on major infrastructure projects.

I have pushed past my initial comfort zone to adapt to project workflows and embrace a career in construction.

What did I accomplish?

I successfully built a strong practical understanding of infrastructure projects and a solid foundation for my career. I have learnt to navigate site operations, environmental reporting and project workflows.

I have a clear long-term goal of becoming a fully qualified environmental professional.

How did I show up during my graduate program?

I made it a priority to show up with a willingness to learn. I aimed to be a reliable team member who consistently supported the design team. I fully engaged with the DTI Graduate Program, connecting with fellow graduates across the business. I approached these relationships with an open mind, recognising that learning is a shared journey and that true growth often comes from collaboration.

Having started as an Undergraduate Engineer at DTI, I showed up to my graduate role with strong familiarity of the site and the people, allowing me to take on new responsibilities seamlessly.

What impact did I have on those around me?

By completing my First Aid and CPR training during my undergraduate role, I was able to actively contribute to the safety and wellbeing of the team on site early on.

I acted as a reliable support system for my colleagues, helping them meet project deliverables while simultaneously building my own practical and technical knowledge.

By participating in an Engineers Australia panel session, I shared the value of my mentor-mentee relationship. This gave me the opportunity to share my experience and support other emerging professionals.

What am I proud of?

I am incredibly proud of how much I’ve grown, both personally and professionally. I have developed a strong sense of confidence and significantly strengthened my communication skills.

I am proud of learning how to operate effectively within a highly complex, multidisciplinary project team on a major infrastructure project.

I successfully pushed my boundaries by practising my public speaking skills during the Engineers Australia panel alongside my mentor.

What did I accomplish?

I took the strong foundation I built during my undergraduate role at DTI and converted it into a smooth, successful transition into my graduate position.

I have secured a short-term rotation with the project planning team. I have learnt Primavera P6 and am successfully developing a more well-rounded understanding of how planning, design and delivery align.

How did I show up during my graduate program?

I showed up eager to learn and contribute to my team – and most importantly, caffeinated!

My approach was to remain open-minded, ask questions and embrace every opportunity – whether it was participating in a new scope of works, attending workshops or collaborating across teams.

I aimed to be proactive, curious and dependable – even when stepping outside my comfort zone.

What impact did I have on those around me?

I strived to be a supportive and collaborative team member. Whether through contributing ideas in meetings or assisting colleagues with project tasks, I hope I helped foster a positive and productive environment.

What am I proud of?

I’m proud of several milestones from this past year. I have developed stronger technical and professional skills, particularly in quality and stakeholder communication. I have learnt how to use several different software packages which allow me to contribute effectively to project reporting, on-site clash detection and my overall productivity. I have built meaningful relationships with mentors, peers and leaders across DTI, which has greatly enriched my experience.

What did I accomplish?

I have maintained a strong commitment to continuing professional development, completing structured learning modules and workshops that enhance both my technical knowledge and leadership competencies. I have gained significant confidence in on-site environments, effectively engaging with subcontractors and site teams to support project coordination, communication and quality assurance. I have applied my new knowledge of systems and other digital engineering tools to conduct several clash detections and resolve potential design conflicts early in the project lifecycle.
