Meet Josh from consulting

Consultant
Bachelor of Commerce, Economics and Finance

The future is now in our consulting practice.  As the world around us changes, our team is moving at pace, creating new services and reimagining old ones – think cyber, data analytics, procurement and supply chain, and so much more.

We welcome out of the box thinkers and dreamers. Our clients range from public sector entities embarking on large scale change programmes, to dynamic businesses wanting to change the world. When you join our consulting team, your imagination is your greatest asset!

"More than just a workplace."

One of the biggest highlights working for Grant Thornton is the scale and variety of client work that comes with joining a globally sized firm. I get to work closely with lots of talented people from deliverers through to partners on many different jobs across a variety of sectors.

While everyone is encouraged to go above and beyond for our clients, we still maintain a culture that balances professionalism and having fun. The variety of work you see in consulting is one of the greatest draw cards.

Grant Thornton prioritises the well-being of its people; this is exemplified by our nine-day fortnight policy where we take a half day on Fridays (with a full day’s pay) to rest and recharge. The social culture here is really great too. Each month there is a different event organised by the social club. It’s really more than just a workplace.

Where the rubber hits the road, this is the team where it all happens! With every twist and turn of our economy, FAS is there to respond.

Think M&A, valuations and restructuring, all the way through to helping businesses in distress; for our superstars in FAS, no two days are ever the same. It takes a special kind of skill and a special kind of person to work in this team - an eye for detail, deep specialisation, empathy and pragmatism. If you possess these qualities, the FAS team want to meet you!

"Hands on client work, freedom to grow, and a supportive environment."

From starting the application process, to attending my interview and meeting the team, I just loved the atmosphere at Grant Thornton – the culture here is really friendly.

I get lots of opportunities to work across different client engagements and industries; this broad exposure gives you the time and space you need to really explore what you’d like to specialise in.

On any given day I could be working on a financial model or some due diligence, or an insolvency case. Our culture strikes the perfect balance of hard work and having fun - whether you’re into its sports or social gatherings which happen every month, or both! And the team genuinely cares about your wellbeing – we work a nine-day fortnight which really demonstrates how seriously Grant Thornton takes the work-life balance of its people.

"Coming into the office is a joy."

My journey with Grant Thornton started as an  intern. What struck me immediately was how  welcoming everyone was. Now as a graduate, that first impression has proven absolutely right – from day one, my colleagues have been incredibly friendly and supportive.

What makes Grant Thornton special is how we work together. Everyone, in each office from juniors to partners, shares the same open-plan floor space, creating an environment that’s professional yet refreshingly down-to-earth. I love how this setup encourages natural mentoring and knowledge sharing. Whether I’m  preparing financial statements or working on tax returns, there’s always someone willing to explain concepts or answer questions. BAS grads also get exposure to a wide range of businesses and sectors; every client brings unique insights into different industries, making every day a new learning experience.

The firm genuinely values work-life balance, which makes coming to the office a joy. We have regular social events and weekly get-togethers that help us connect across teams.

Meet John from tax

Graduate
LLB/BCom - Economics and Finance

As a bedrock service for firms like ours, tax is an important part of our business. But the everchanging legislative environment means tax is always dynamic.

Nothing stays the same which makes it difficult for growing businesses to keep up with the opportunities and pitfalls of local and overseas taxes. We provide holistic tax advice for individuals, corporations, businesses working in New Zealand or overseas, well-established companies or growing operations. Our tax team comprises deep specialists wrapped up in warm human casings who love nothing better than delivering advice that brings calm to confusion and certainty to change.

“From tax compliance to complex consulting projects - every day brings new learning opportunities.”

I love Grant Thornton’s dedication to grads’ professional and personal development, and its commitment to mentorship and continuous learning. In my role, I get to work on tax projects that help me build both my technical expertise and client relationship skills. A typical day in my role involves a mix of compliance and advisory work across various tax areas, assisting clients with their obligations, and ensuring clients comply with tax rules and reporting  requirements. I also enjoy working on consulting projects that involve complex problem-solving and research. Understanding tax law intricacies and applying them to real client situations is both challenging and rewarding.

Everyone, from partners to peers, is invested in my development. The buddy system has been especially helpful, as it allowed me to learn from someone who has walked in my shoes. I also have access to comprehensive learning resources through Kia Puāwai, our learning and development platform, and the firm’s support for my CA studies has been fantastic.

Meet Jesse from audit

Auditor
Bachelor of Commerce - BCom, Accounting and Finance

Our audit services go beyond signing off historical information, and our approach is not typical of firms that only look in the rear-view mirror to see what happened last year.

We know the value of a robust audit approach and pride ourselves on our expertise and rigour, but we also know clients value so much more than that, the personal touch, open communication and the ability to talk through matters before they become issues. We know what the future of audit can be because we’re living it today.

"The learning never stops and every question is welcomed."

I joined Grant Thornton because of the opportunities for genuine career growth and the chance to work across different markets. The firm’s reputation for being supportive and open to learning has proven absolutely true – everyone here, including partners, is approachable and willing to help, regardless of which team they’re in.

My typical day involves client visits, analysing financial statements, and collaborating with my team. What I particularly value is how the firm encourages us to take initiative while providing the support we need. As an auditor, I get fantastic exposure to different clients and industries, and lots of hands-on experience which has been invaluable for my professional development.
