Our History

Coles opened its first store in Collingwood, Melbourne in 1914, and over the course of the last century we have evolved into an iconic portfolio of leading retail brands providing Australians with everyday products including fresh food, groceries, household goods, liquor, and financial services via our store network and online platforms.

Our Sustainability strategy

We're working with industry partners, suppliers and customers to increase food security, reduce waste and overall, conserve our valuable resources.

In FY24, we made good progress against our sustainability strategy, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our more than 115,000 team members.

Below is a snapshot of our FY24 sustainability achievements.

  • Team:
    • 42.5% women in leadership roles1, against a target of 40%
    • 8.8% improvement in total recordable injury frequency rate2, from FY23
    • 3.6% of team members3 identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • Environment:
    • 1.5% reduction in combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions from FY23, a 34.5% reduction from FY204
    • 86.7% of total solid waste5 diverted from landfill, above our target of 85% by FY25
    • 87.4% of packaging across Coles Own Brand and Coles Own Brand Liquor is recyclable6
  • Community:
    • $38.5m provided in community support7
    • 39.8m equivalent meals8 donated to SecondBite and Foodbank
    • $3.7m awarded through the Coles Nurture Fund to help Australian producers innovate and grow
