Systems & Automation Specialist

Mates That Matter is looking for a self-directed student to help design and build practical systems that improve how our organisation operates.

This is not a traditional software development role. The focus is on systems thinking, AI implementation, automation, integrations and no-code/low-code tools.

You’ll work directly with our Operations team on real projects across areas such as:

  • operational workflow automation
  • internal management systems
  • onboarding and follow-up processes
  • feedback and communication systems
  • AI-supported marketing and community management
  • integrations between existing platforms
  • identifying new opportunities to reduce manual work and improve efficiency

Our current stack includes Airtable, Zapier, Google Workspace, Connecteam, Circle, Fillout, Xero, ChatGPT and Claude.

We’re less concerned about extensive coding experience and more interested in someone who can understand a problem, think logically about how a system should work, and take ownership of designing and implementing a solution.

The role offers a high level of autonomy. You’ll often be given an operational problem or opportunity rather than a detailed specification, and will be expected to help determine the best solution.

Who we’re looking for

Students from Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, IT or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

You’ll likely suit the role if you are:

  • analytical and systems-minded
  • highly self-directed
  • comfortable experimenting with AI and automation tools
  • able to turn broad ideas into practical solutions
  • interested in improving processes and eliminating repetitive work

Coding experience is valuable but not essential.

The role is approximately 8 hours per week / one day per week, primarily onsite, and is paid.

Strong performers may also have opportunities for ongoing paid work with Mates That Matter.

Application procedures
Please submit your CV along with a short introduction outlining:

  • your degree and current year of study
  • any experience with AI, automation, no-code tools, software or systems design
  • an example of a system, automation or process you have built or improved, if applicable
  • why this type of role interests you

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal interview with the Mates That Matter team.
